NO! On English Only Proposition

Supporters believe that immigrants aren't trying that hard to learn the language, as Fred Gray a Republican State leader put it "we think these new immigrants should buckle down and do what our immigrant forefathers did. They need to learn English and become part of our society"(White 2). Whose society is Mr. Gray referring to, and why can't these people be apart of it with their difference? The think that it is absolutely necessary to function as a productive citizen and feel that immigrants aren't taking their responsibility to learn it. Stanley Diamond the chairman of the California English campaign was quoted saying "Immigrants earlier in this country's history took it as a personal obligation to learn the language of their new country. It seems different for immigrants coming in the last 20 years"(Epstien 2). He is basically referring to the Latin and Asian communities in the U.S., not any European immigrants. That is why others and me feel that this proposition is singling out-groups of people and is very discriminatory. They think these people are just being lazy, even though there are 4500 students taking basic survival English classes at San Francisco's City College and hundreds more turned away each semester because of the lack of space (Garcia 1).
Many of these recent immigrants" children speak English as their first language and a recent study shows that 98% of Latin parents believe that it is very important for their children to be fluent in English to function in this society (Iwata 2). Dawn Garcia a columnist from the San Francisco Chronicle tells that around California these immigrants swarm to Basic English classes to only be turned down or put on huge waiting lists, because of the lack of funding by the state. Dan Peck, the Director of the Chinatown/North Beach Community College Center said, " these people want to learn English but there's not enough places here for them to do it"(Garcia 2).
