Canadian Confederation


" As a result of the French-Canadian fears a man named Louise-Joseph Papineau rose to defend the French-Canadians with nationalistic principles and requested more control in the assembly. Papineau and many other leaders led rallies when they were denied their requests from the Assembly. .
             Just as these problems were arising in Lower Canada, Upper Canada were also having rebellions against its government to establish a democracy. William Lyon Mackenzie led the rebellions in Upper Canada, which eventually forced the British government to change the form of government. Before doing so, the British government sent the Earl of Durham to the Canada's to devise a plan that would stop the rebellions. He returned to Britain with the conclusion that Upper and Lower Canada should be united. .
             From the Durham report the British Parliament established the Act of union in 1840 that united the two Canada's under a single parliament. The official language was to be English and the colonial government answerable to the British Parliament. This caused problems with the French-Canadians that gave them stamina to push for Confederation in later years. .
             In the 1850's the colonial government of the Province of Canada could only ascend to premier and no farther advancement could be established. This restraint made the politicians more motivated to rise farther and was reasoning behind establishment of a Confederation. This colonial society angered the public and the politicians who could do nothing but get employment elsewhere. From this inconsistency in the colonial government derived the Reform Party. This party was concerned with the French-Canadians dominating the Province of Canada. They feared this from the George - Etienne Cartier and John A. Macdonald government who adapted the movement for Confederation in 1858. .
             From the Reform party, led by George Brown, of mostly protestant farming communities derived two main goals.
