Road Rage

Looking at the incidents of road rage today, the aggressive driver could fit any social profile.
Drivers have come up with many reasons for their violent behavior. People may make a bad judgment call when it comes to others driver's actions and react in an unreasonable manner. Another motorist may cut them off or even turn without signaling. We can increase this list ad infinitum. In many incidents the drivers have been affected by circumstances totally unrelated to the incident. The driver may have trouble at home and has a hard time dealing with those issues. Unfortunately in these cases the drivers tend to take their aggressions out on the people nearest to them at the time of their lapse of emotional stability.
Anther theory on this is based on the fact that people are very territorial. As a defense mechanism, when these drivers invade their space on the road, they retaliate and in return they have to become the aggressor to protect themselves (Joint, 1995). Drivers have been known to honk their horns or flash their headlights. Reactions like these are very common and the drivers usually calm down after they drive away from each other. In some extreme incidents drivers have been known to ram cars with their bumpers or even force other automobiles off the road.
Increased traffic congestion is also looked at to be a major cause in these types of behaviors. It seems as traffic get heavier the violence increases. Not enough freeways, road construction, or just a heavy flow of traffic due to a dense population can cause traffic congestion.
Aggressive driving has also been known to be cause by domestic violence. After a couple has had their argument and their hate has grown to the point of violence they sometimes turn their aggression to the road. From January 1990 to September 1996 at least 322 incidents of domestic violence were brought to the highways in the U.
