Hero

During the course of this semester as a class we have made comparisons among our readings. We have read many insightful stories that examine the pattern of an adventure hero and examine life along with its many characteristics. Many of the stories that we have read have been related to mythical gods or super human creatures. In the story The Odyssey by Homer and Sir Gawain and the Green Knight by Burton Raffel this pattern remained consistent. Both Sir Gawain and Odysseus revealed qualities of chivalry while sharing similar patterns of an adventure hero. .
In both stories Gawain and Odysseus display characteristics of chivalry. The characteristics that Gawain and Odysseus display most are honor, allegiance, and fighting fairly. First Gawain and Odysseus both display honor by defending themselves or someone else. Gawain shows how he maintains his honor by accepting a challenge for King Arthur. During a Christmas dinner Arthur is interrupted by a Green Knight who wants to play a Christmas sport. In order to maintain the kingdoms prestige and fame, Gawain honors Arthur by rising to the challenge of the Green Knight. Gawain says to the Green Knight, "Let this challenge be mine" and in doing so he has honored and protected King Arthur (Raffel 58). Odysseus displays honor during the Phaecian games when Alcinous" son challenges Odysseus to take part in their games but insults Odysseus by challenging him. Odysseus must defend his own honor and states, "I am not bad at any kind of sport. I can handle the polished bow well and I would be the first to pick off my man with an arrow in the enemy ranks". Odysseus continues on to tell Alcinous" son that the only archer ever better then himself was Philocteses who in now dead (Homer 99). Odysseus says this to defend himself and to make Alcinous" son know he will defend his honor with more than just words and games if necessary. Next Gawain and Odysseus display to whom and to where they"re allegiances lie.
