Death Penalty Journal

However, as the years pass it seems to have lost a little bit of its value. Each year, the crime and murder rates rise, and sadly to say, the future does not hold much promise for decreasing. And, as the murder rates rise, as does the controversy surrounding death penalty. It seems that nowadays, no one is impartial; everyone has an opinion about which side they stand for. According to Edward I. Koch, capital punishment affirms the fact that life is truly precious. .
Koch says that this is easily demonstrated that it strengthens the value of human life because if the penalty for rape and other such heinous crimes were lowered, it clearly would signal a lessened regard for the victims" suffering, humiliation, and personal integrity. "It is by exacting the highest penalty for the taking human life that we affirm the highest value of human life." I, on the other hand, do not accept this logic. I agree with death penalty victim Joseph Carl Shaw when he states in a letter to the governor that "killing is wrong when I did it. Killing is wrong when you do it." I simply do not see the logic in murdering someone who has committed a murder because the same penalty is occurring; the taking of someone's life. Plain and simply put, killing is wrong.
