Afterwards over sixteen miles of matching curbs and sidewalks were put in around the entire area. Then, to finish it off, the land was speckled with some four thousand evergreen shade trees and three truckloads of palms to make this neighborhood one of Texas" finest street layouts. The project cost approximately $350,000 (approximately $3,000 an acre) which is quite a considerable amount of money if converted into its modern day value. Finally the new area in Houston needed a fitting name. Montrose was chosen after a small town in Scotland which had many times seen downfalls but always ended up being a prosperous town. Montrose's first residence was built around the first of the year 1912. Prices for homes in Montrose were not as expensive as one would have thought. The homes ranged from $3,000 to $8,000 dollars back then. .
Over the course of time the Montrose area has established many unique architectural attributes. Some of the more prominent architectural monuments include the Plaza apartment hotel, the J. W. Link mansion, and the Fondren mansion all located on Montrose boulevard. The Plaza Hotel was designed in a Neo-classical style with Italian Renaissance detailing modeled after the Ritz-Carlton Hotel in New York, The Biltmore in Atlanta, and the Hotel Winton in Cleveland. It is located at 5020 Montrose boulevard at the cross of Bartlett street, in the vicinity of The Museum of Fine Arts, the subdivision of Shadyside, and Rice University. The Hotel was built by the Southwestern Construction Company for a cost of $1,000,000 and officially opened on February 21, 1926. Air conditioning was added in 1958 and a complete renovation was done in 1977 by then owner Daniel Dror. The Hotels is constructed in a central block layout plan with protruding wings designed to let in the maximum amount of light at all times of the day. It is eight stories tall plus a raised basement.
