Atoms

What is the significance of the derivation of the term atom?.
That matter appears to be continuous but is actually discontinuous. This means that the continuations of division of a matter would eventually reach a limit to this dividing, a particle that could not be further subdivided. The Greek philosopher Democritus (460-326 B.C) developed this model in the fourth century B.C., and he called the indivisible particle atom. Greek word meaning "uncuttable.".
Be able to distinguish among the term atom, element, molecule, and compound?.
             Atom .

             • Indivisible minute particles called atoms make up all matter.

             • All the atoms of an element are exactly alike in shape and mass. .

             • The atoms of different elements differ form one another in their masses.

             • Atoms chemically combine in definite whole-number ratios to form chemical compound.

             • Atoms are neither created nor destroyed in chemical reactions.
Element: Substance that cannot be split chemically into simpler substance. The atoms of a particular element all have the same number of protons in their nuclei.
Molecule: Group of two or more atoms bounded together.
Compound: Chemical substance made up of two or more elements bounded together, so that they cannot be separated by physical means. Compounds are held together by ionic or covalent bounds.
Be able to distinguish among proton, neutron, electron based on mass and charge properties. Be able to explain what an ion is and why one might result.
Ion is and why one might result:.
When an atom loses or gains electorns, it acquires an unbalanced electron charge and is called an ion.
Proton: (Greek "first") in physics, a positively charged subatomic particle, a constituent of the nucleus of all atoms.
Neutron: The neutron is a composite particle, belongs to the baryon group. Neutrons have about the same mass as protons but no electric charge, contribute to the mass of atoms but do not affect their chemistry.
