The American heritage dictionary defines feminism as the belief in the social, political, and economic equality of the sexes. I however see feminism as a rebirth of strength, a rebirth of a world that has giving women the names of slave, concubine, second- class citizen and has defined there shape size and dress through its media. I emphasize on world because sometimes we tend to only see what is in front of us but what of women in the Middle East, Africa, and Asia who knows not that feminism isn't a liberty but a right! .
Women of shape, women of color, women of old and women of new together all fight for understanding, respect and feminism. Something we sometimes forget. I like many other women on my block have watched through there window with judgment and disdain. As the scenes in front of me grew from peaceful conversations to violent beatings, distorted figures, and abused bodies. I know girls that only eat salad, girls who would do anything to have the figure that graces the new fashion magazine. A young girl not older than me sat on my corner bloody and shamed after a violent scene with her boyfriend, a few moments later he returns to hold and console her, now this upsets me! Why would she go back to him? Why? I grew even more angry instead of empathy and compassion I judged her looked at her demeanor and though it's her own fault. .
But it is not her fault, if you or I were in the place of a women who felt lost, abused, unwanted, and chastised what would we do. We as people can be very hypocritical for example I sometimes look in the mirror and think I wish I looked liked one of the girls from TV tall and skinny with long hair. I have tried not eating once but I couldn't do it after hours of struggle I raced at the first smell of food. But when I see images of bulimia and anorexia I turn my nose up and think she is so stupid, why would she do that? Why because she has the same thoughts we do only she may not have the support or strength of self that others have.
