The thieves and crooks learned quickly that if they could be persuasive enough, they could manipulate people into giving them all kinds of information and it was easier than all the work they had to put into it prior.              These crooks take advantage of the fact, that over time, most people develop a false sense of security when using their computers and surfing the internet. People begin to feel a false sense of privacy that thieves use to their advantage. Most people know just the basics of how a computer works, just enough to turn it on, do what they need to do, and get off. Most people don't know how to forge an email so that it looks like a legitimate email from a trusted and known company, so understandably, they don't think about dishonest people intentionally learning how to do just that in order to commit crimes against them and others. The crooks know and understand this sense of privacy and exploit it to get people to voluntarily give them all the information they need. They have developed their skills into an art form. .
             Crooks have an endless bag of tricks to get people to give them the information they need to steal their identity. They will send an email telling a person they are the system administrator and that something is wrong with the person's account and they need to get information from the person to ensure that the problem is corrected. These people are very convincing and develop their email to look genuine and official. They will ask for the "customer" to give them their mother maiden name to verify that the person really is the customer. They will tell the person that their credit card has expired and that they need to give them a new credit card to ensure that their service isn't interrupted.
