No one will deny that the current food system is totally inadequate. The American people have become so accustomed to eating pre-packaged, precooked food that to take a little extra time to prepare home-cooked, quality meals seems a waste of time and money. While this may save the consumer money in short run, in the end they pay the price with their health. At the same time the local growers are struggling to get by on the barest subsistence, not being able to compete with the huge multinational corporations. My food system provides the answer to the fundamental flaws that are slowly killing our society.
The first step in my plan is public awareness. The problem is that most people do not know that the 99% of the food they are eating covered with deadly pesticides that these huge corporations use so as to turn the largest profit possible. Once the public knows the facts they will be much more accepting to widescale change. The next step would involve government funding to the small, local organic farmers who care more about the quality of the product than the profits they make. Currently, these farmers are producing their healthy alternatives but the public has been slow to embrace them because of the higher price of the food. This is not because of their greediness but, rather because it is more expensive to use safe, organic fertilizers. The government funding would allow the growers to grow more crops which would, in turn, lower to cost to the consumer. Unfortunately, even with government funding, the price to the consumer would still be higher than if they just stuck to the current system, so change will be difficult. Once the public knows the harm that they are causing can be avoided, radical change like this will be possible.
