The Bird Man

" Only knowing one actual skate park, the Oasis skatepark a 20 minute drive toward San Diego, Tony wanted it so badly so his "dad did the next best thing; he built a small wedge ramp in [the] driveway. (26)".
Tony's first real board was a Dave Andrecht board for Sims. Although Tony and his friends had skateboards they didn't have safety equipment so they had to rent pads. "It's the ultimate extreme sport. And take more balls then motocross, skateboarding, and BMX combined"(28). It was so bad because by the time they had gotten to oasis to rent pads 4 other sweaty, stinky skaters had had the pads already. But none of this mattered to him because he was skating oasis. "I would have worn a diaper on my head if those were the rules" Tony once said (29).
In the fifth grade Tony's mom piled a bunch of his friends in the car and drove them to Oasis. Tony knew it was love at first sight. "When skaters go to a skatepark, its like entering utopia its like the Elk's Club for kids with scabs. (28)" .
The moment he stepped in the park he did not take a brake the whole day and skated every bit of the park. " It was a vacuum that sucked all my energy, and for the first time in my life I actually felt content. (29)" From that day on all Tony's energy was focused on getting rides to Oasis after school. Tony delivered papers and spent all of his money getting into Oasis.
Tony's dad and his brother Steve gave him ride to the skatepark once a week and when Steve couldn't give Tony rides any more his dad became his chauffeur. After a wile all of his old friends had lost interest in skateboarding and Tony had lost interest in everything but skating. He had to go to the park alone and make friends there.
Skating was a black hole in Tony's life. He quit all of his other sports just to skate. "Every day I doodled skateboarding in school, skated in the house, and skated anywhere nearby. (33)".
In the late 70's Tony's skateboard hero, Stacey Peralta, started a company known as Powell Peralta.
