This story begins in Willemstad, an island of curacaa; and it was owned by the Dutch. Philip an eleven-year-old is the main character that lives in Curacao with his parents. They are American, but the reason they moved from Virginia to Curacao is because Phillip's dad worked there. (Phillip's parents hate black people). Phillip's father worked in a refinery producing aviation gas. This took place during world war two.
This Cay was written by the point of view of an omniscient person, which knew everything that was happening with Phillip and Theodore. He completely agreed with Phillip's reaction after finding out who Theodore really was. Knowing that black people are bad and there is no reason to hate them. .
The principal characters were Phillip and Timothy. This two were from two different races; Phillip was white and Timothy was black. Phillip's father always told him that black people were bad. But for some circumstances Phillip and his parents were sailing and the ship got torpedoed, there was panic inside the ship. Every one had to get out and into the lifeboat to get lowered. Phillip was knocked unconsciously and when he opened his eyes he saw Timothy sitting in the raft beside him with a cat named stew. At first Phillip didn't like him because he was black. The next morning Phillip woke up and he couldn't see anything; he was blinded by the shipwreck. But, as days went by Phillip started to accept Timothy even with the color of his skin; Phillip being blind made it easier to accept Timothy. They became really good friends; Timothy taught Phillip how to get around the island were they landed. And learn to interact beautifully becoming a major resource for each other. Unfortunately a hurricane wiped out the island and Timothy died. The theme is about the friendship that gave birth with Phillip and Timothy. Leaving out their different color and race. They learned that no one should be judge by the color of the skin, and understand that a person is worth in what he carries inside.
