Communication is the process by which people send and receive information. In order for a supervisor to communicate with their employees to motivate them they must use clear communication free of noise. Noise can interfere with the communication process by distorting messages you are trying to communicate to your employees. As a supervisor I will have to make sure that my employees are using active listening and they understand the facts and feeling I am trying to convey. I can use feedback or the way they respond to my message to make sure they are using active listening. The type of communication I will have to use is Downward communication because I will by sending message to my employees, which are at a lower level of the organization.
Once I have clearly communicated to my employees this will help me to motivate them or giving them incentives to act in the way I desire. There are four main categories of motivators I can use Time, Behavior consequences, Money and Keeping the job interesting. In the first category time I can use flextime, which allows an employee the opportunity to set their own work schedule. I can also use job sharing for example if an employee can only work part time they can share the duties of a full time job with another employee. The next motivating category I can use is Behavior consequences such as reinforcement, punishment and behavior modification. These use desirable and undesirable consequences as motivator. The third motivator I can use is money such as financial incentive, using the piecework system, commissions, profit sharing plans, and gainsharing. These money motivators give the employee a chance to earn more money through their performance and the performance of the organization. The fourth motivator I can use is making their job more interesting, I can use job rotations, cross training, job enlargement and job enrichment. These motivators give employees verity of job to learn, more training and make there job more interesting.
