Roger and Me is a documentary by Michael Moore. This documentary is about the town of Flint Michigan, the birth place of General Motors. General Motors pulled their business out of Flint, shutting down all their plants. Flint Michigan went from being voted most livable city to worst city to live in.
General Motors and Roger Smith did nothing ethically wrong in pulling their business out of Flint Michigan. The Chief Executive Officer (CEO) has a responsibility to its stakeholders to make a profit. General Motors left Flint Michigan in order to move their plants elsewhere in order to make a better profit. General Motors knew that they would hurt the community of Flint Michigan when they closed their plants, therefore, the gave the city and its employees plenty of notice. General Motors closed the plants one at a time over years, not days , or weeks.
I believe the community and city government let the city of Flint Michigan down. The community and city government had an obligation to the community to entice General Motors to stay or attract other business "s into the community. Ethically and morally the government leaders let the people of its community down. The city could have lowered taxes, or eliminated some taxes in order to get General Motors to stay longer, or long enough for the city to prepare. The community and city government had a responsibility, ethically and morally to the people of Flint Michigan.
General Motors could have been a better corporate citizen by helping the community attract other business into the city. If the city had attempted to attract other businesses, General Motors would have been a good corporate citizen in helping the city with its plan. This is the only area in which I think General Motors could have helped Flint Michigan during the plant closings.
General Motors did nothing ethically wrong when they closed their plants in Flint Michigan. The community and city government did not aggressively attract new business into Flint Michigan.
