Reality Shows

FOX broadcasts commercials as if they were proud of deceiving and lying to these women. At the end Joe chose a school teacher named Zora. He then had to tell her that he is worth absolutely nothing and only makes 19,000 dollars a year as a construction worker. I"m sure some people really believe that she actually wanted to be with Joe Millionaire, even after he lied to her for weeks. On the other hand, Zora was coaxed, bribed, or she may have simply wanted the diamond ring received if she chose to continue the relationship. You be the judge. .
Either way, this is not the type of person America needs to teach our children. Call me conservative, but I don't want America's children thinking it is acceptable behavior to get engaged to someone because they"re rich. If their teacher did it, then why can't they? Teachers are role models and children look up to them. .
Imagine, if you will, agreeing to appear on a show to let America choose your spouse by watching the show and voting by telephone. One of the conditions is you have never met each other. At the end of a several weeks, you are engaged to a stranger. Now what? All the key elements of a working relationship are missing. A lot happens between meeting each other and marriage, in general, a few years, which is a considerable amount of time to get to know each other. Really, what kind of person chooses to do something as absurd as this? I suppose we can watch "Married by America" to find out. "Lighten" up, it's just T.V.," you might say. Maybe, but with the divorce rate higher than ever and still rising, American television does not need to endorse marriage in this context, and call it reality on top of it. Even endorsing the act of engagement as an empty promise is no better. People decide to get engaged when they know they want to marry their significant other, and plans develop to do so from there. Engagement is not simply a test-run as relationship reality shows portray.
