Project Planning & Scheduling

What is planning & scheduling? Work planning is deciding how to handle the entire range of construction related activities and issues, such as how to transmit engineering information to the construction organization, deciding which work to subcontract and which work will be self-performed, and planning for start-up after construction. Work planning for the most part is establishing the logical sequence of project activities and the interdependencies necessary for delivering common objectives as well as the products of each phase as required by the project charter/success criteria. Construction scheduling pertains to converting the multi-discipline logic to a timetable with specific calendar dates governing the start and finish of the work. Basically there are two steps : Adding durations to activity logic and Analyzing against timing needs and developing other schedule options through the schedule risk assessment process. The owner's project team and construction should review all schedules as necessary to concur with dates, discuss the risks of meeting project timing objectives, and develop contingency plans. In practice, work planning and scheduling are not clearly separated. The people who develop the work plans have a great deal of input into the project schedules. On smaller projects, the same person or team often handles work planning and scheduling.
