Such honor is one rooted from a person who truly is good hearted, yet, sadly, her mother does not see it. In Asian tradition, the flesh represents more than just a piece of skin. To them the flesh An-mei's mother cut off was a sign of forgiveness, values taught, and a way of saying, "Rest Your Soul." Furthermore, as children grow their mother's beliefs are carried within. Take An-mei for instance, she moved in with her mother shortly after her grandmother's death. After a few years An-mei's mother killed herself. Next to her mothers deathbed An-mei spoke powerful words of what truly was in her heart. She told her father what would happen if she didn't receive the treatment that her mother would have wanted her to receive. And she pointed out how everyone would be condemned if these demands weren't met and her mother's little boy wasn't returned. She stood up for herself and her mother to make sure their honor wasn't left unnoticed. As by speaking up her honor was being presented and growing with strength in a good heart. By having honor toward your family your own personal aura is building stronger and brighter through time.( /452).
Many times children have been used to help a parent gain pride, and as the child commits a mistake the feeling of disappointment makes them think the parents has lost all they had for them. Often children are put in little competitions against a friend just to allow the parent to say, "My daughter is better than yours." This might mean a lot to the parents, but a child can't read at this level. They must be allowed to see it in a simpler matter, something they can understand. Reflecting to this, in the beginning June's mother, Suyuan Woo, put her daughter in a talent show competition to have her show off to her close friend, Lindo Jong, the mother of Waverly Jong. June with the skill of an angel at playing keys, and Waverly with a mastermind planning out strategies to conquer everyone at chess.
