Portrayal Of Gender By The Media

When an average man or woman sits down to watch television most do not realize the way women and men are portrayed in not only the programs, but also in the commercials. The media has made images of the way the "ideal" man or woman is supposed to look like. The images that the media has put into the minds of millions of people are, in the opinion of many, not sexually bias and portray men and women as equals. Are these images gender bias or are people just misinterpreting them? In Sut Jhally's Dreamworld II, the sexual connotations that are in the music videos played on MTV are made evident. The way the cameras are angled, looking up women's skirts, panning women up and down, and putting them in little clothing, all make women look like sex objects. The roles that women play in music videos have to do with their looks and sexual arousal of men. The way men are portrayed is the total opposite. Men are usually fully clothed and are seen as the more dominant character in the storyline regardless if a man is the performer or not. The way a video is rated by the critics depends on how many women are "displayed" and how little clothes they have on. Sex sells. This, in part, has to do with the vast numbers of videos that have the same style. One could understand if the music industry was doing this style of videos just to sell the artist's album. The problem with these videos is the influence that they are having on the age group of people that these videos are marketed to, teenagers. The minds and views toward these delicate topics, sex, drugs, and violence which are the primary subject of these videos, are being displayed in a negative way without these kids or their parents even knowing what is going on. The reaction of the majority of the people who saw the video in class including myself, was of astonishment and surprise. No one would have thought of some of the most popular artists in the music industry would imply such bad views to most of their fans.
