Juan Ponce de Leon was born in 1474 in San Servas, Spain. In his early years, De Leon fought with Spanish troops that drove the last Muslim stronghold out of Spain. He sailed with Columbus on his 2nd voyage to America. From 1502 until 1504 he was a soldier in Hispaniola, Puerto Rico from 1502 till 1504. He soon became governor there. After being in office for only 3 years, he left that country, desiring to explore new worlds. In his quest for locating the fountain of youth, he discovered what we now know as Florida. He eventually left Florida and sailed back to Puerto Rico and helped build the city of San Juan. In 1521 He sailed from Puerto Rico back to Florida. When he became ruler there, he attempted to conquer his new subjects. De Leon and his men fought with the inhabitants there. Defeated, he was forced to return to Cuba where he soon died in 1521 of wounds received in battle.
