The local news also mentioned an increase in gas prices, the Buffalo Sabers won against the Detroit Red Wings and that driver Tony Stewart was the winner of the MBNA America 500, the NASCAR race I was watching earlier in the day at work. The 4th news piece mentioned in the local news was the report of "the most dangerous fighting yet" slowing almost to an end in the major military offensive across seas in Afghanistan. I felt the time spent on the event was very insufficient, only mentioning the offensive called "Anaconda" was slowing and soldiers were returning to base after 8 days of fighting, and that there were no casualties. After the feeling more should have been done to enlighten the public of this situation I felt this had to be the event that I focus the attention of my paper on. Even after I turned to MSNBC.com later that night I had to dig deep, way beneath the headlines to find some information on this event. I feel it fits perfect to the idea the media only adversities the information they thing the public would want to hear. .
Much to my dismay as I questioned my roommate and friend down the hall about the most recent event in Afghanistan either won could honestly tell me that they have heard the latest. Showing the main interest in the average college student is not in the 11 o"clock news. I then processed to question 2 other non-UB students. The first person I called was a friend from work, a Amherst High School student, he was unaware of the latest developments and told me he didn't watch the 11 o"clock news as he sometimes does because he was too busy catching up on homework. I then though hard about who I know that watches the most news in hope to find someone up to date on the situation, one person came to mind, my mother. I called her to ask if she had heard about the slowing of the offensive across seas. She told me she had not heard about the slowing which was a disappointment to me, but she continued to tell me she had remembered hearing about the start of the operation, and the US had experienced 7 causalities in a short time in the War since the beginning of the offensive.
