Snooky, an old man with a mental disability, stands outside and smokes a cigarette. He does not say anything to anyone. He just sits there and stares. Sally is 61 years old. She has a physical handicap. The only thing she does all day is sit in her wheelchair and travel from room to room visiting her friends. These are just two of the 202 residents a Clover Bottom Developmental Center. .
Clover Bottom is a facility that is permanent residence for people with mental and physical disabilities. The residents range from the age of 21 and up. The oldest person living there is 90 years old. Clover Bottom opened up in 1923 and has remained the same ever since. There are 10 buildings that make up this facility. They have not added any knew residents since 1994.
Many people would think that in a place like this, you would be sheltered. That is not the case. Many of the residents have jobs outside in the community and with Clover Bottom. They have family members who come a visit them and sometimes take them home for the weekend. While living at Clover Bottom, they are never bored or without something to do. Different companies use the residents as volunteers with putting together some of their products and placing labels on them. They have the chance to get on the computer. They read and write as if they were in a school.
The people who work at Clover Bottom are mostly volunteers others are actually employed. The workers seem to be a little distant when it comes to people visiting the center. They act as if they do not want you there or they just don't want to be there. .
Clover Bottom is a really good facility and it is very obvious that most of the people there really care about the residents. Anyone should be happy to have their family member there because they would be well taken care of. The location of the facility is good because there is easy access to the community and it doesn't seem as if they are trying to keep them way from the world as if they dangerous to society.
