Motivational Speech On Maurice Clarrett

             1. By not letting Clarett enter the NFL, the NFL is, per say, breaking .
Federal Antitrust Laws. Paul Haagen, a Duke Law professor, states that .
"Any attempt by competitors to restrain competition in the labor market is regarded by the courts with great suspicion," and " unless the restraint falls under a limited number of narrow exceptions, it will be treated as a violation of the antitrust laws." The Duke Law professor also said that Clarett has a strong case and that the NFL will probably have trouble keeping Clarett out of the league.
             2. Now the NFL is the only professional sports organization that does not let players into the league right out of high school. Baseball, basketball, hockey and soccer all allow players to join as soon as they graduate high school. The NFL can benefit from all of the undiscovered talent out there. .
             3. Also, Clarett could become a pioneer with early eligibility just like Spencer Haywood, a young basketball player, challenged the NBA way back in 1971. Haywood paved the way for young stars such as superstars Kevin Garnett, Kobe Bryant, LeBron James and someone else you might know by the name of Michael Jordan.
             B. {Clarett not physically ready}.
             1. The NFL has this opinion that Clarett is not physically ready for the pros. Maurice Clarett has proved that he is a premier running back. In high school he was voted "offensive player of the year" by USA today, and ran for 4,675 yards and 65 touchdowns. In his first year of college at Ohio State, Clarett led his team to an undefeated season and the undisputed national championship while running for over 1,200 yards and 18 touchdowns. (Oh, and by the way, of the 14 games he missed 4 because of injuries). Experts say if Clarett was allowed in the 2003 draft he would have most likely gone in the first round and would have a contract and signing bonus worth millions of dollars. Saying that Clarett is not ready for the NFL is something many of his opponents would argue.
