Students are as busy as their parents are these days. In an article by Kathy Stobogin, Survey: Many students say cheating's OK, Stobogin references a survey by Rutger's Management Education Center, "of 4500 high school students found that 75 percent of them engages in serious cheating". One reason might be that there is so much information available, a person might think there is nothing new to write about.
The amount of information available on the Internet is staggering. The Internet covers every subject from A to Z. A student just needs to go to one of many web sites that sell term papers or essays. Some of the web sites are schoolsucks.com, schoolpaper.com, termpapers911.com or hotessays.com and buy a paper for a specified price. The cost of papers purchased from the internet are discussed in Reflections of The Internet Paper Mills by William K. McHenry of Georgetown University, "Most charge by the page, ranging from $1.00 (minimum charge $10.00) to $8.95". McHenry, also states that some sites give papers away for free, or charge a membership fee, or you must register with the site and submit a paper. You can also request a custom written paper with a per hour fee. The student then proofreads the paper and adds their name. This type of plagiarism is plagiarism in the first-degree and the student should fail the paper and the class. This is the easiest type of plagiarism for a teacher to catch. The teacher only needs to send the paper off to a web site that helps teachers find plagiarized papers. One of those sites is turnitin.com, there is also antiplagiarism software that a school can purchase to catch plagiarizers.
Students may also be cheating to get ahead in life. Students have to get good grades in high school to get into a good college and good grades in college to get a good paying job. With a good paying job, you still need to cheat to get ahead in your job, because of all the competition in the work place.
