As students, we are not clones of one another so we should not be forced to wear a school uniform everyday. Uniforms imply that differences are bad and that we should all look alike, think alike and be alike. In my opinion that is not at all true.
It has been said that school uniform builds self-esteem because children can't be discriminated against. Have you ever seen a fat girl in school in inform? School uniform does not build self-esteem. It encourages self-hate. Young girls growing up are self-conscious of their growing and developing bodies. They should not be obliged to wear something in which they are not comfortable. Further still, some students may look better in school uniform. As adolescents, naturally, they will feel like they are better than the rest who don't feel as though they look as good.
It has been said that school uniforms instil discipline within students. Exactly what discipline does uniform teach students? It has been proven, time and time again, that in schools, which have strict uniform policies, the amount of detentions and suspensions have increased due to having compulsory school uniforms.
Uniforms are not cheap, and at times cost more than casual clothing that students would prefer to wear. It has been said having school uniforms saves money. But how? Parents would have to spend double the money on clothing. They would have to buy their child a school uniform for during the day, and then as soon the child was to arrive at home, they would immediately change into casual and more comfortable clothing. This means that parents will be spending money on both uniform and casual clothing. This would not have to be done if there was not a set uniform.
Yes, I do agree that children will always want expensive clothes and will want to keep up with the fashion trends. There will always be Dimmey's uniforms and Gap uniforms, hand-me-down and new uniforms. Children will continue to compare their clothes to one another, but at least if the child is wearing what they choose to wear, then they will be confident and most of the time comfortable.
