Beach Balls are round and they have stripes of color. If two people were standing opposite each other holding on to the same beach ball, one would see yellow and orange while the other would see blue and green. The first person holding the yellow and red side of the ball has never seen the other side and he assumes that the other side is the same color. Nothing that the blue and green sided guy can say can persuade the other guy that the ball could be a different color. This illustration shows how attitude and perception can alters how people see and interpret what they see and hear. Religion and science work the same way. Most humans are not open to interpretation and ideas. Richard Feynman wrote an essay on the relationship of Religion and Science. In his essay he struggles with the way religion is interpreted. In his essay he admits that he does not know all the answers, but he asks that one looks at the others ideas and leave room for reflection. Religion is an individual personal speculation. A personal religion is based on attitude, perception and convection. Religion is not an object, religion is a theory. Individual truth is crucial. Religion is what one makes of it.
Attitude is an outlook on life. Daring to question is not a sin. Tommy believes in his father's god. He was taught that if you sinned you would be punished. He was taught that God saw everything that he did and if he didn't follow strict rules he would go to hell. The rules that Tommy was taught did not seem fair or even feasible but Tommy followed them the best that he could. When ever Tommy would make a mistake he would go trough a living hell full of guilt and shame. When it came time for Tommy to move out and get married he found himself in a mess. His strict narrow minded ways of living made it hard to function with another. Tommy's wife would frequently suggest alternative choices, but Tommy would hear nothing of it.
