OS2

To try to help the dysfunctional child IBM upgraded him to version 1.3 attempting to solve a few of his problems, but he was still not a stable enough OS for most of the users. Again trying to help their child IBM upgraded OS/2 to version 2.0, this time it really seemed to help him; finally he was strong and stable. He had a fine new object-oriented graphical interface known as Presentation Manager (PM), stable DOS program compatibility, and, something completely unexpected (especially considering that Microsoft abandoned him to raise the windows child): strong Windows program compatibility. Finally OS2 operating system was an adult. .
Unfortunately OS2's reputation had been damaged by his bad behavior as a child and most users did not accept him as an adult. This was sad because despite his still many short comings, in many ways he was superior to his bastard brother Windows. But he never got to work in as many computers as Windows. Windows was already working in most computers when they were sent to their users, but, users had to install OS2 themselves. When users did choose Os2 he was very happy of course, because that made him feel special, but most users simply used Windows because he was already installed.
             (End of fairytale).
It should be noted that though windows 3.X sales, though easily 10 times that of OS2 were largely original equipment sales (installed at the factory) most sales of OS2 were to people who thought it through and bought it deliberately, often removing Windows in the process, and those machines count as Windows sales. The story of OS2 is largely ancient history, but a trip to IBM's web site shows that OS2 is still alive and well. On this page is an advertisement unapologetically cut and pasted from the IBM web site:.
