Nurture V Environmrnt

To what extent are we the products of our experiences?.
To what are we the product of our experiences? Essentially, this is the nature V nurture argument that has plagued scientists for hundreds of years.
Are we intelligent because we inherited it or because we were reared in an intellectual stimulating environment.
In truth, we can never solely depend on just one to get us through life, as, we are, like it or not, a phenotype.
This means, fact, we are a mixture of our heredity and our environment. Even though, we cannot change our genes, we can however, physically and mentally change ourselves, because of our new environment.
For instance, if we had the gene for perfect sight, we might not actually have perfect sight, if we constantly are too near the T.V. or keep straining our eyes.
Another instance is the brain disease the brain disease, PKU that can lead to retard ness. But now, it is checked for at birth, and if it is detected, then the child is put on a special diet, and the baby can lead a relatively normal life.
So, if we are to fulfill our heredity blueprint, we need a suitable environment first.
But what if we had the suitable environment, but didn't have the genes? Would we then be able to fulfill our environmental obligations?.
Intelligence is one of the main issues here.
It is generally accepted that intelligence is related to both heredity and environment. Studies done on families, particularly among identical twins and adopted children, have shown that heredity is an important factor in determining intelligence; but they have also suggested that environment is a critical factor in determining the extent of its expression. For instance, children reared in orphanages or other environments that are comparatively unstimulating tend to show retarded intellectual development. In recent years, controversy regarding intelligence has centered primarily on how much of each factor, heredity and environment, is responsible for an individual's level of intelligence.
