Nursing is a profession that requires a person to be capable of doing many tasks and having compassion and dedication. The nurse is someone who provides acute care for patients, something that doctors can not achieve. Nursing involves many specialized tasks that the nurse has to be able to perform at any time. Nursing is a career that is ever changing and enlarging it's field of knowledge. .
A nurse in the world today is very different than our predecessors. The basic concept is still remotely the same but the knowledge required has become greater with the advancing technology and intelligence. A nurse that excels in his/her profession should be a well-rounded person with many good qualities. They should be able to be compassionate, caring, intelligent, good at problem solving, be able to multi-task and love their job. Of course anyone that finishes the schooling and passes the liscensure exam can be a nurse but to be a good nurse I feel that one should care about their job and the work they do. .
The debate over whether nursing is a profession or not is simple to me, of course it is a profession. Nursing requires a person to be intellectual, have many responsibilities, it has a basic body of knowledge that can be learned and is refreshed and refined through research and many other points match those of Flexner and Bixler. Professional nursing is a career that is respectable and well needed in the world today.
