The executive part of government is the party in power, or the majority, in the House of Commons, and this party is headed by one of its own, the Prime Minister. There is no election of the head executive in the United Kingdom by the people, and the selection of the Prime Minister is the will of the party in power and the crown. Typically the crown asks the leader of the party in power to be Prime Minister. The legislative part of government is parliament as a whole, consisting of the House of Commons and the House of the Lords. Within the House of the Lords rests the judicial part of the British government, the Lords of Appeal, which is comparable to the Supreme Court of the United States.
Although the two governments may have a bicameral government there are many discrepancies between America and The United Kingdom, or Great Britain. Here in the United States the way our legislative bodies are selected is much different from the way they elect the officers of parliament. Under the constitution there is to be one election held every two years to re-elect the entire House of Representatives, and at that time one-third of the senate must be held up for re-election. However, in the United Kingdom the political party which is in control of House of Commons, one part of the bicameral body, may call for a re-election of the House of Commons. The typical reason for a call for re-election in The House of Commons is to make it easier for a bill to pass if an election is held. In parliament under the United Kingdom's constitutional laws there must be an election for the House of Commons every five years. .
Another dissimilarity is shown in the representation of the commonwealth in the two countries. In the United States our bicameral legislative body is made of the House of Representatives and the Senate. In the Senate there are one hundred representatives whose term lasts for six years, and after that six year period there is another election which allows every state to send two representatives from each state to serve in the senate.
