Nationalism and Resistance of the Viet Minh and Ho Chi Minh

 

            Through the bitter hardships endured by the Vietnamese due to French colonialism, one could not foresee the development of Vietnamese nationalism and resistance. However, this became a reality because of Ho Chi Minh and The Viet Minh's nationalistic ways and determination to overthrow the French and gain Vietnam's independence. .
             At the end of the Second World War, France lied in ruins and Vietnam was left with no governmental occupation after the surrender of the Japanese. This was known as the August revolution and can also be seen as the turning point for Ho and the Viet Minh as they filled the power vacuum' and declared Vietnam independent which gave Ho the opportunity to gain support from the peasants. Although the Viet Minh were crushed in the south and an unhappy compromise lashed out at them, this did not stop Ho and his party from gaining the hearts and minds of the peasants, which he would use to help build up the Viet Minh.
             It would take another nine years until Vietnam would be independent. During this time Ho Chi Minh and the Viet Minh would play a vital role in the development of Vietnamese nationalism and resistance. Ho Chi Minh developed the ideologies that promoted Nationalism and would lead to Vietnamese resistance and The Viet Minh carried out the attacks using tactical guerrilla warfare.
             On 2nd September 1945, was the day Ho Chi Minh formed the peoples' republic of Vietnam and was also the day he spoke out about his anti-French movements. These consisted of the severe damages that the French had caused to the country, the harshly affected rice fields due to the French robbing them for their own interests and the economic class system that had not existed prior to French colonisation and how this type of system had done more damage socially then good economically. This speech given by Ho showed the Vietnamese people that they were no longer going to stand for this type of treatment and how the overthrowing of the French will bring about independence this brought out peoples feelings of national pride and willingness to help in a resistance movement.
