People have said that advertising does not affect them in any way shape or form. But what we seem to forget, is that advertising comes in all shapes and forms. They have the most affect on who we are and sometimes who we think we want to be.
When a young woman looks at a magazine with a slim figure, beautiful skin, luscious hair, and the quality of a magnificent woman, she believes that this is what she should look like. When a man sees a muscular figure, a trim torso, abs of steal, and all the women he could ever have, he believes this is the life he should have. To me it seems that people put to much emphasis on what everyone else looks like. Instead of just thinking hey I want to be healthy, have a good personality, and a long fulfilling life. We are thinking oh my GOD her breast look fuller and her hair is perfect, something must be wrong with me if I can't look like that. .
But what got me was when I watched the film "Killing me Softly" and she made me realize that computers make the faces that we see in the magazines. She said that when Michelle Pfeiffer was put on the magazine cover, her face had to be computerized into what is known as the "Perfect Face". It should start to make you think, if she was not "Perfect" enough, what exactly is?.
Women starting from age13 are taking this too heart. They believe that if their breast are not a size D and their stomach is not flat and their body is not tan. Then there is something wrong with them, and they have to do whatever is necessary to fix it, even if it means harming themselves. I work with 2 fifteen year old girls, and when they ask me "How come I cant have Lil" Kim's body" (rapper) or say "Guys don't like me because they say my breast are not big enough". It makes me want to scream, they don't realize their bodies are still maturing, and hey Lil" Kim's body did not look like that until she had a few touch ups done here and their.
Now mind you we have Lil" Kim on her knees with her breast almost falling out of a too small bra, and she has teeny weenie bikini on with stiletto hills.
