Melting Pot

Immigration creates diversity which is the quality of being different. 339) Different definitely does not mean bad, but others do not feel that same way. Early immigrants into the United States were met with harsh tension. A fight between the Old and the New, the new and the "White." Americans could not handle this diversity and they wanted everyone to be the same. They expected all of the immigrants to jump into the "melting pot" and come out "American"(pg. 8) What they did not understand was that no two cultures will be alike, and we will never be equal in any intercultural encounter. .
These differences in cultures in the United States have created ethnocentrism in which cultures think that theirs is superior to the next. When ever you feel this way and you interact with someone of another culture you create a false identity for them. Everyone has a unique identity and it is hard to portray this fully. If someone has already prejudged you than it is hard to communicate with them. Rather than communicating as two people, power is brought into the conversation. It is important to be self reflexive and to know your culture as well as others. The "melting pot" is nothing more than a false fallacy, and rather than try and create one culture we should try to welcome and understand others.
