At the end of the story, Meg is the only sister that had set up a home in which she desires nothing more than to be a housewife. Beth the third eldest of the sisters, is sweet, kind, and gentle in every way. She goes about her daily duties uncomplaining and is dearly loved by everyone associated with her. At the young age of seventeen, Beth falls ill and dies; however, her sweet nature lives on in the hearts of those that knew her best. Amy, the youngest sister, yearns for the fines in life and wishes to be an artist. She eventually finds happiness as the wife of the sisters" neighbor Laurie, who is much like her in many ways. Jo, the second in line, and heroin of the story, is high-spirited and independent. She passes through the first twenty years of her life as a tomboy, and has a deep passion for writing. Throughout the novel, Jo is never completely sure of what she wants; until she meets professor Bhaer, whom she falls in love with and marries, living in her aunt's old house with "a wilderness of boys" (Alcott 441). Each girl finds her own personal happiness on a separate path in this timeless coming-of-age story by Louisa May Alcott.
Life experiences are often the most believable and touching elements of a novel. Louisa May Alcott used this autobiographical method when writing her famous novels and stories. This novel is forever imprinted in the mind of the reader due to raw honesty of Alcott as she related to her own trials and tribulations through the lives of Meg, Jo, Beth, and Amy. Through the distinct similarities between the sisters in the novel and her own, the in-depth detail of autobiographical events in the novel, and the effect that these events have on the reader due to their autobiographical nature, Alcott has created a novel that will not soon be forgotten by the American girl.
The four sisters in Louisa May Alcott's Little Women directly characterize Louisa and her own three sisters.
