Within the New Democracy of Andrew Jackson, many new policies were put into place. Suffrage was expanded, and financial institutions restructured. However, disadvantages came along with these advantages in this New Jacksonian Democracy. .
One of the downfalls was that the extent of political freedom was stretched to all white males - but only all white males. From that class, the poor were very well able to advance to wealthy as well as powerful. However, Native Americans and those who were enslaved did not gain the same rights extended to whites. This white supremacy was one of the questionable practices taken up in the New Democracy. .
Another questionable practice of Jackson was the spoils system. In this, political supporters of Jackson were rewarded with a place in office. This was not only unfair because only followers of Jackson would hold an office, but because it allowed people who were inadequate for the job to help rule our country.
The belief that an ordinary person could perform the function of political office was ludicrous. This is because it takes a certain kind of person to lead and be capable of taking the responsibility of holding an office. With the spoils system, corrupt people were allowed to take charge. This led to corruption within our system of government. .
These were the main disadvantages and questionable actions of the Jacksonian Democracy. Though some advances were made during this period, these downfalls played a major role in this era. Hopefully we have advanced in our system of politics since that time.
