event that they can't let go of or a achievement that they feel defines them. This idea can be easily seen by looking as the average college student. Most students are going to school not to learn but to get a degree to get a job to make a lot of money. The problem with this is they make the future the only thing of value and it doesn't even exist. With living in the moment people develop a stronger appreciation for life. If someone understands the value of the present moment they can always find peace in it. By knowing that all that exists is right now it makes this moment the only thing of real value for it is all there is. This idea is one that has been around for thousands of years. It is a key element of most eastern thought. This concept is one that most people will spend large amount of time and energy to comprehend. Monks can spend hours a day meditating for years before realizing the truth in this idea. Yet throughout his writing Gibran presents this idea in a such a simple way it can be over looked because it seems so obvious.
In one of Gibrans most famous works The Prophet he conveys the idea of the present moment as it applies to everyday life. Furthermore he explains how one must live in the present moment even in situations that can appear undesirable. In the section "On Work" Gibran shows how important living in the present moment is with out even saying it. In this section he explains how man often views work as a misfortune and something that people must struggle through yet this is not to be . Gibran explains that work is a something people take for granted if people did not have the ability to work we would be human . Work is man showing that he understands something and is acting on it Without work man could not produce the things needed to survive. Furthermore in this section he explains that working with out love is worthless. Work with out love is the reason that people have this negative outlook.
