The deer were lying on the ground, no bullet holes, just skinny and sickly looking. Animal cruelty isn't killing a deer and using the meat, it's letting the population get so large that the deer starve to death or get pushed out of it's natural habitat because there is no room for it to live there anymore. In Missouri alone, we use 75 cubic ft. of wood products a year for a total of 375 million cubic ft. of wood products (Jaco & Garvey, 11). Hunting is necessary for many reasons but, mainly for controlling animal populations, such as deer. Right now, the deer population is at an all time high, and yet there are still people who think it's wrong to kill off a small percentage of the herd so they don't starve to death. In 1900, there were about 500,000 deer in the United States. Today, there are more than 20 million (Goldsmith, W.S.). Also, in 1900, there was much more land for the deer to roam and more deer were killed. Today, hunters harvest an annual four million deer a year across the United States (Almy, 24). Those people who think hunting is wrong have probably never been hunting and don't realize what another four million deer a year would do to the country. There are some hunters who hunt for only a trophy and this is wrong, but it's not the majority that are doing this.
Regulated hunting is a necessity in controlling deer and other animal populations. Especially these days, with all of the new roads and houses being built, hunting is definitely needed. The more roads and houses we build, the less land that deer and other animals have to live on. People, not animals, are the problem. We are the ones pushing them out of their natural habitat. Each year the number of deaths to people caused by deer.
is increasing. Hunting is more important now than in the 1900's for two reasons. First, for the reasons that are stated above. Second, for the reason that deer didn't used to have more than one offspring, but now they"re having two and sometimes three.
