This social stratification dates back to when the Kings ruled the land. The Kings were the wealthy and then down the social class were the lords. At first the peasants were equal, but then the lords sought after the best herder and then that peasants= herder pretty much had control over that land and the others were pushed to the outskirts to fend for themselves. Of course that peasant didn't=t take all the profit from the sheep or cattle, then he may rise in the social class. The peasants were to give a certain amount of wool or so forth, that way the herders would never rise in the social class and everything would be in order pertaining to wealth.

Cultural Inferiority is also a major barrier when it comes to climbing the ladder up to the next social class. The book quotes that if your parents are poor and you are brought up in poverty more than likely the child is doomed to be poor also.
