Being a Veterinarian

 

            The goal in my life is to attain a career that I love doing daily.
             profession, to me, would most definitely have to be a veterinarian. .
             Veterinary medicine began several hundred years ago. It was practiced by men .
             with no degree. They practiced their profession with no anesthesia, no .
             antibiotics, limited income, minimal equipment, and minimal knowledge. .
             Today, it's a different situation; the potential is unlimited.
             The profession of veterinary medicine began in the early 1800's when .
             people's horses and other animals (pigs, oxen, cattle, goats, dogs) became .
             ill or injured. These early animal doctors had little references to go by, .
             they assumed that the animal and the human organs were in the same locations .
             and in the same proportions. The veterinarians back then used very crude .
             tools and often times the animal would get an infection because the utensils .
             were not sterilized. Also, under operation the patients were given primitive .
             anesthesia that rarely eased the pain. There were no antibiotics in the .
             early days to fight infections so many of the "treated" animals became sick .
             and died after the operations. As the time went on, more and more .
             veterinarians were needed, thus new technology was invented to keep up with .
             the rising animal population.
             Now days, animal care has become very complex. Instead of one .
             veterinarian that does everything there are different vets for just about .
             every purpose. They play a huge role in the healthcare of pets, livestock, .
             zoo animals, and laboratory animals. Their time commitments vary because .
             small animal vets have their clients bring in the animals whereas large .
             animal vets have to make house calls and don't see as many patients a day.
             The two main types of veterinarians are the ones that treat large animals .
             and the ones that treat small animals. More than half of all veterinarians .
             major in small animals. Small animal vets usually take care of dogs, cats, .
