This definition does seem valid, yet quite out of date. The picture of gangs that this paints for a person is that from old movies where orphans came together and did little mischievous things around their town. This definition does not really seem to fit today's gangs.
In 1980, another man came up with a definition for gangs. A man named Walter Miller defined gangs after talking with criminal-justice system professionals and others that worked with the youth. Miller's definition of gangs was, "a self-formed association of peers, bound together by mutual interests, with identifiable leadership, well defined lines of authority, and other organizational features, who act in concert to achieve a specific purpose or purposes which generally include conduct of illegal activity and control over a particular territory, facility, or type of enterprise." This definition of gangs sounds a little more accurate and concurrent with the gangs in today's society, yet it still seems a little too aggressive when compared with gangs today. This definition sounds like the gangs that used to beat, charge money, or just harass people who went through a certain area of a neighborhood.
A man named Dan Korem came up with his own definition in the year of 1994. Dan Korem studied suburban gangs and defined a gang as, "a group of youths who are banded together in a specific context and whose activities include, but are not limited to, criminal acts. Adults may or may not be a part of this group, but when there is adult involvement, they will only represent a small minority of the gang membership." This definition is a lot more accurate concerning the gangs that roam the streets today. That just shows how gangs have changed throughout the years.
