Family Value

In my childhood, I was very depressed if my mother was not home when I came back from school. My father went to work in the morning and came back in the evening, and my mother stayed home, cooked hot meals and welcomed me back from school. That is what I call a traditional family and take for granted. A traditional family structure in the content of 20th century in the United States culture is a nuclear family, which consists of a husband, a wife, and their children. However, this family structure has been challenged by alternate family structures such as a single parent family. I strongly believe a traditional family structure is more desirable for children than a non-traditional. .
One of the most significant characteristics of a single parent family structure compared to a traditional is an unbalance between a father's roles and a mother's. Some people might claim that men can do whatever women can do such as housework, cooking and taking care of children. In the article, "The Train Cake" by Michael Dorris, even though he believed that he could achieve the status of being an "ideal parent" by himself without a wife, he had no choice but to ask help from his female friend, Nina, when he had to bake the train cake for his son, Adam's birthday. He did not know anything about baking the cakes; he had to seek help from who knew more about baking than he. If he had a traditional family, he would not need help from her because his wife could have baked the train cake for Adam's birthday. He also would not be scared when he had received a call from the director of the day-care center due to having children going to hospital at night by adding too much coloring for the cake.
Another disadvantage of a single parent family structure is a lack of a single parent's paying attention to his or her children. When a single parent is working for wages, who is taking care of his or her children? A single parent family would most likely have less flexibility in time with children than a two-parent family.
