The first attack by the eighth army started today .
With 1,194 men in the forward area,only 1,021 .
pieces of artillery, and 832 field guns. The RAF has .
over 900 hundred plains. For the first time we .
actually have an advantage over them. We are led by .
General Bernard Montgomery he has some pretty good .
ideas of how to beat the German, Italian troops that .
are led by the Field Marshall Erwin Rommel. At night .
the XXX Corps were fighting their way on to Miteirya .
Ridge and they were also on the southern sector. The .
XIII Corps also made some progress, but the .
minefields made a big delay on them. .

This morning we found the body of General Stumme .
after dying of heart failure while his driving .
through the 90th light to see what was going on. The .

ugh the first mine field but halted. Rommel came .
today and relieved Stumme's replacements. He saw .
that the fifteenth Panzer had only thirty one tanks .
left and little gas. He also saw that there were .
heavy air and artillery attacks that was inflicting .
heavy casualties on his troops. Rommel drove the .
british back by throwing in his reserves.

Last night Gatehouse's tenth armored division .
tried to push forward. There was a lot of confusion .
with the gapping parties. Vehicles became over .
banked. At about 10:00 last night a German bomber .
destroyed about twenty five vehicles that had gas and .
ammunition aboard. This started a fire that lasted .
the entire night. Gatehouse was going to call of the .
attack but didn't. This morning Montgomery's first .
attack was no that strong. Knocking out about 200 .
British tanks. The XXX Corps has got most of its .
objectives though. Also this morning the eighth army .
took about 2,000 prisoners. The british intelligence .
was over estimating the amount of casualties of the .
Axis forces.
