Dylan Thomas

Dylan Thomas was able to establish himself as a strong poet even though he only lived to the tender age of thirty-nine. Thomas struggled with many different evils throughout his life such as an abusive father, troubles in school, depression, poverty and severe alcoholism, which eventually killed him in 1953. Although considered controversial at times and unorthodox, his poetic genius has presently earned him a place in literary history.
Thomas was born in Wales on October 27 in 1914 and attended Swansea Grammar School where his father was the senior English master. His father D.J. Thomas was an extremely hot-blooded man who was both feared and adored by his students as well as his colleagues. He was known for being rather physical with the boys in his class. If a boy irritated him he would hit them and sometimes even physically kick them out of his classroom. One could only imagine how dreadful it might have been being one of Thomas" students, imagine being one of his children. However even though he had a short temper, Dylan's father was a great showman and the students loved to hear him read aloud in class. It was said by his students that Dylan's father had a very theatrical and powerful voice (Dylan Thomas.com 1).
