When organizations are faced with the issue of cutting costs, many first reactions are to cut labor, which usually results in downsizing. However, it is often recommended to the organizations that are considering downsizing to look at all of their alternatives first and let downsizing be their last option.              Long-term alternatives to corporate downsizing require companies to do a lot of extensive planning. Issues regarding the company's future performance must be addressed. The company should try to determine what skills will be needed, as well as which skills will fit the organization's objectives. When organizations take the time to figure out what skills will be essential to the company in the future, the company becomes more capable of hiring key people. This strategy makes it necessary for top management to keep direct contact with the human resources department as well as line managers. Management must be aware of changes taking place in the internal and external environment. Issues concerning technology and the organization's turnover rate must also be addressed. Organizations should make predictions/forecasts on what positions will have vacancies in the future. The company should also know the required skills needed to fill the vacancy, as well as the demand and supply for the desired applicant. Some companies are allowing their employees to come up with their own individual plan, and then the employee's plans are compared to the company's objectives to see if there is a fit.
