Disturbing Social Trend

Which prevailing social trend are you most disturbed by and why?.
We have always been taught that competition is required to help us reach our fullest potential. In this age of knowledge expansion with the limited power of assimilation and goal-orientation, results have become the assessment of a person. This has led to a disturbing social trend -- excessive competition. Excessive competition creeps in every corner of life, be it schools or workplaces. Time and again, it has caused much pressure and distress among people.
At a tender age, students are face excessive competition in schools, due to the high emphasis placed on grades. In academically high-ranked schools, students are exposed to tough entrance examinations. Parents recognise that their children must have sound foundation to compete for jobs in the future, hence they take the enrolment of children into good schools very seriously. With so many children competing for limited places in prestigious schools, the teachers are forced to conduct interviews or academic ability diagnostic tests to sieve out the best. Yearning to measure up to their parents" expectations, the children put pressure on themselves to perform better than their competitors. Sadly, the batch that succeeds have to face more daunting competition from their intellectual peers. Students strive to emerge top in their class and are convinced that the most important thing in life is winning, to the extent that they may resort to back-stabbing. When they fail, they fall into depression and lose all interest in studying. This defeats the true purpose of learning. Furthermore, the stiff competition intensifies during major examinations, such as the "O" and "A" levels. As such certificates indicate a person's job prospects, there is extreme pressure to excel in order to succeed later in life. Students from the nation compete with one another. Apparently, during this time, school ranking suddenly becomes exceedingly important to a school's reputation.
