Crime

Once another entertaining fact is released the previous is forgotten. Therefore, from the moneymaking aspect of any news channel or magazine printing to bring in the money outweighs printing the facts that make or break a case.
In a perfect world, misjudgments and false truths would not create any problems because our judicial system would always come out on top. Though our court systems thrive on treating the accused as innocent until proven guilty, it is impossible to keep out public opinion in such highly publicized cases as the Peterson case. Whether or not Scott Peterson is actually proven guilty, he will be looked as guilty for the rest of his life. Is this justice? It is just a new and improved form of the Scarlet Letter. If the media had ignored this case as they do hundreds each day anyone outside of California most likely would never have heard of Laci and Connor Peterson. Its extensive coverage has turned it into a storyline that has America hooked until a final decision is made. Instances such as these pull at our heartstrings and keep our attention no matter the headline. .
Delaying a case can also prove to be very lucrative for the media industry. The longer a case takes to go to trial and actually come to a decision the more headlines, stories, and interviews can be profited from. Once they have reeled the public in they have them hooked. The public wants to know every juicy detail from his extramarital affairs to his favorite food. Many of the delays in the beginning of trials have a lot to do with how much coverage the media has contributed to each case. Changes in venue are sometimes necessary because a case has caused such an uproar in the area the crime was committed. With a case as large as the Peterson trial, change of venue may not be as helpful because of its publicity. If it had not become such a spectacle, maybe another jurisdiction would have provided a much calmer environment.
