The Pilgrims traveled to America on the Mayflower on 1620. The original place of settlement was Virginia but the Pilgrims ended up in Plymouth. Although in 1691, Plymouth became a part of Massachusetts's Bay.
The governing system in the New England colonies was really in a uproar. There were so many different views and opinions which made it hard to determine what the people really wanted. In the beginning, when the Pilgrims came to America, they were seriously indebted to many British investors. The Pilgrims had borrowed a lot of money to come here and poverty was extremely high. The community was struggling and rebellion against the religious reform was extremely likely. To prevent chaos "41 men combined themselves to serve as a civil body politic" (Divine, Breen, Fredericton, and Williams, The American Story, 51). In later years, the New England Colonies adapted to having a governor which reported to the mother land and John Winthrop was voted for many times in Massachusetts. Winthrop was a man of religious faith and he was a Puritan. Each colony elected governors and shared many of the same duties. The governors who were elected most likely had a strong position in the church and in the community. These governors were elected by the voters and the voters were the members of the church. Many more advancements take place in the governing system in later years but in the beginning this was basically the system.
The religion of the new England Colonies was quite unique in a diversity since. The whole purpose of the Pilgrims coming to America was for a religious reform. The Pilgrims had separated themselves from the Church of England and adjusted the religion to meet their own needs. The Anglican Church in England was to much like the Catholic Church. Pilgrims were Protestants who came to America and later rebelled against the Puritans. There were two types of Puritans: Separatists and Non-Separatists.
