We saw the rise of Neo-Liberalism government elections in such counties as Margaret Thatcher British Prime Minister in 1979, Ronald Regan US President in 1980, and Joe Clark Prime Minster of Canada in 1979(Carroll and Shaw, 195- 217). The big Change we saw in Canada was after 21 years of being under power by the Liberal party, except for 200 days in 1979, when Joe Clark, had a minority government but lost on a non-confidence vote, Canada was controlled by the Liberal party at the federal level. This meant for the first since 1957 till 1963, under John Diefenbaker, the Right wing party, the Progressive Conservative was back in power in Ottawa with a majority government under Brian Mulroney, We saw the government and the country shift back in the Right side in ideology of politics (Gollner & Salee, 7-20). Brian Mulroney would be elected in 1984, and would remain in power for almost a decade, until 1993, and during his time, he would have a majority government to make an impact on the international stage. In this paper, it will discuss, what were Mulroney foreign and defence policies, and what changes did he make with Canada in terms of its relations with other states.
In the election of 1984, Brian Mulroney, would win 211 seats in the house of the commons, for a solid majority of the seats, with 75 percent of the seats. This was the third largest in history, and in Canada when you have a majority government; this means that you can get a lot of thing accomplished easier and much faster at least that is what people believe in theory. The second thing it means is that, unlike a minority government, just Joe Clark had in 1980, with a minority government you can only focus on domestic problem. Because it is hard to make an impact on the international stage, because it is harder to get thing accomplished because you have to do wheeling and bargaining with the other parties (Swats, 556).
