Birth Order

Consequently, it is vital to change the attitude toward the child in concrete communication aspects (Brent).
Typically the approach to the first-born children features over-parenting, over-restriction, and over-security (Leman). Only-children have almost the same characteristic as the first-borns. Parents have very high expectations for the first-borns or only ones and because of this they tend to be over-achievers, easy to discipline and perfectionists. The 9th chapter about motivation in website http://www.rrcc-online.com/~psych/Birth1.htm gives an example which states that even 21 out of the first 23 astronauts sent into outer space were first-borns. First children and only ones tend to be achievement motivated because they get a large amount of their parents" attention. Parents know everything about their first or only children. Parents know what their first word was, when they made their first step, etc. On the other hand first-borns and only children get not only attention but also a huge amount of responsibility to fulfill the expectations of their parents. They are afraid to fail these expectations; therefore, they choose to act in already known way and avoid unusual problem solving methods: they usually tend to be conscientious and tradition-respecting (Meyers 386).
Differently from first-borns, middle children seem to be the rebel against the family values and also to carry such features as sociability and a support for new ideas. Middle children usually grow under less supervision then first-borns and get less pressure. Therefore, they tend not to be over-achievers and perfectionists (Leman). Furthermore, as middle-born children always have to be mediators between first-borns and youngest children, they develop excellent social skills. Middle children usually have many friends and are socially relaxed and popular personalities (Meyers 385). Furthermore middle children are more supportive of new ideas.
