Is the Barbara Kingsolver book, The Bean Trees, sexist against men? The book is in fact sexist against men. The first reason the book is sexist is because of the way the men in the book are portrayed. The second way you can see the book is racist is by the narrator's actions toward men.
The first reason the book is sexist is because the men are portrayed negatively throughout the book. The book seemed to focus on the negative aspects of the males personalities. "He was famous for drinking Old Grand Dad with a gasoline funnel, and always told Mama never to pull anything cute like getting pregnant." This is all that is said about the main character's father, nothing positive is said about him. Throughout the book, with very few exceptions, men are seen as negative influences to women.
The second reason the book is sexist is Taylor's unfair stereotyping of men. Throughout the book Taylor doesn't seem to give men a chance. Taylor thinks very negatively of men and is almost scared of them. "I didn't like the looks of him." Taylor said this of a man at a gas station in Tucson even before she met him. This is an example of how Taylor stereotyped men.
The book is sexist because of the negative way men are portrayed and the unfair way Taylor treats them. Men are treated with hostility like they are the enemy of women, and are never given a chance.
