With an invitation from Israeli Prime Minister Menachem Begin, Sadat made a historic visit to Israel, during which he traveled to Jerusalem to place his plan for a peace settlement before the Israeli Parliament. Sadat called this memorable journey a "sacred mission," which gave signs of hope as well as new initiatives (Sullivan 109). During his stay in Israel he stated, "Today, through my visit to you, I ask why don't we stretch out our hands with faith and sincerity so that together we might destroy this barrier?" ("Anwar"). He was determined to conceal the disputes between Egypt and Israel. Despite strong opposition from most of the Arab world, this visit initiated a series of diplomatic efforts. His pilgrimage to Israel transformed all outlooks on the Arab-Israeli feud. Courageously, he broke a pattern of mutual hostility between Egypt and Israel. In a global level this move was brilliant, capitulating Sadat to the front ranks of International diplomacy ("The Rule of Sadat"). "Sadat became the darling of the west and gave the Arab world a new image of moderation" ("The Rule of Sadat"). This breakthrough would eventually lead to the Camp David Accords. .
